Penguin Environmental Design (PED) is a professional landscape and residential design firm located in Hamden, Connecticut. Our principals are a team of Japanese landscape architect and residential designers who have practiced and were educated in both the U.S. and Japan.
PED especially cherishes small projects: new constructions or remodeling /improvements of small houses and gardens. We also take on a wide variety of projects: parks, campuses, public art works in commercial/institutional buildings, urban design projects, and urban studies.
PED is active both in the US and in Japan. It was first founded as a First Class Kencihkushi (Architect) Office in Osaka, Japan in 2001. It was later registered as a limited liability company in Connecticut in 2008. PED has been the recipient of many awards, including:
- Finalist, Windscape Competition, Boston Society of Architects, 2006
- Finalist, Northern Osaka Station Area International Concept Competition, 2003.
PED's Design Philosophy One - Japanese + Modern
- PED's designs are distinctly Japanese in a sense that many of its design concepts, whether they are conspicuous or hidden, are based on the spatial philosophy of Japan.
- PED's designs are visually modern and meet the needs of the American lifestyle.
- We do not flood the spaces with superficial Japanese stereotypes. We take hold of spiritual cores and fundamental elements of Japanese design and adapt them to American houses and gardens.
PED's Design Philosophy Two - Dwellings + Landscape
- PED creates a unique relationship between dwellings and their surrounding landscape. Even when the project is only on inside or outside of the building, we take special care in designing a united space with a view to and from the other side.
- To integrate dwellings and their landscape, PED works as a team of specialists of both landscape architecture and residential buildings.
